Conviction Rates for Child Abuse Homicides Similar to Those of Adult Homicide Cases


Background: Homicide is 1 of the top 5 causes of death of children in the United States. More than 1700 childhood deaths were caused by child abuse and neglect in 2008, which translates into a fatality rate of 2.3 per 100,000 children. Since childhood abuse and neglect are routinely underreported, these numbers are likely very conservative estimates of a much higher actual value.
