Role of Onyx in Embolization of Type II Endoleaks Following EVAR

Background: Type II endoleak is the most frequent complication after endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR). While some seal spontaneously, type II endoleaks may lead to aneurysm sac enlargement. Endovascular treatment is often challenging. Objective: To assess the utility of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (Onyx) for endovascular transarterial embolization of type II endoleaks. Design/Methods: The authors conducted a retrospective review of patients undergoing type II endoleak embolization using Onyx at their institution. All endoleaks were diagnosed using CT angiography postoperatively. Indication for embolization was enlargement of the aneurysm diameter by 5 mm due to persistent type II endoleak. Technical success was defined as complete embolization of the nidus. Clinical success was considered to be a stable or decreasing aneurysm sac size on follow-up CTs. Results: 11 patients underwent transarterial embolization of type II endoleaks with Onyx in a 7-year period. Technical more...
