Latest Data Support Screening MRI in Patients With Personal History of Treated Breast Cancer


Background: Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI of the breast has been shown to have a high sensitivity and relatively low specificity in the diagnosis of breast cancer. Overall data have shown a relative benefit of screening MRI for those with certain risk factors such as a BRCA mutation. The American Cancer Society currently holds the position that there is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against screening MRI for women with a personal history of breast cancer. Objective: To determine the diagnostic characteristics of breast MRI in women with a personal history of breast cancer. Methods: An electronic medical record database was searched over a 3-year retrospective period to identify patients who underwent either MRI-guided vacuum-assisted biopsy (MRI-VAB) or MRI-guided wire localization and surgical excisional biopsy.
