HIV Disease, Its Treatments Are Associated With Priapism
Background: HIV is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS. There is currently no effective cure. Once infected with HIV, the patient has it for life. But with proper medical care, HIV can be controlled. People with HIV who get effective HIV treatment can live long, healthy lives. Priapism is a condition in which a penis remains erect for hours in the absence of stimulation or after stimulation has ended. There are 3 types: ischemic, nonischemic, and recurrent ischemic. Most cases are ischemic. Ischemic priapism is generally painful while nonischemic priapism is not. Well-known risk factors for priapism include sickle-cell disease, antipsychotics, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, blood thinners, cocaine, and trauma. Many cases are idiopathic, suggesting an opportunity to identify novel risk factors.
