Background: As we all know, behavior guidance is the cornerstone of pediatric dentistry. Behavior guidance techniques mitigate anxiety, help the child to have a positive experience, and foster a feeling of safety in the dental setting. Parental acceptance of behavior guidance techniques has shifted over time. As a reminder, basic behavior guidance techniques are communication, positive pre-visit imagery, direct observation, tell-show-do, ask-tell-ask, voice control, nonverbal communication, positive reinforcement, distraction, memory restructuring, parental presence or absence, and nitrous oxide, and advanced behavior guidance includes protective stabilization, sedation, and general anesthesia.
