HIV Testing Rates Have Increased Among Individuals With Schizophrenia


Background: Individuals with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have an increased prevalence of HIV and AIDS and risk factors associated with these conditions compared to the general population. Individuals with serious mental illness are also at an increased risk for structural and interpersonal circumstances that may increase the risk of HIV. Objective: To study the factors associated with HIV testing among individuals with schizophrenia. Design: Retrospective longitudinal study. Participants/Methods: The study enrolled nearly 7 million individuals with HIV testing with and without schizophrenia using data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services between 2002 and 2012. Inclusion criteria included one inpatient or 2 outpatient encounters for schizophrenia.
