Are Your Cancelled Prescriptions Being Filled?


Background: An estimated 1.5% to 5.0% of cancelled electronic health record (EHR) prescriptions are still filled. The program e-prescription cancellation messaging (CancelRx) was introduced in 2006 which sends an electronic message to pharmacies similar to e-prescribing, although adoption has been slower. About 90% of cancellation messages are successful. Objective: To study the association of the implementation of CancelRx with medication dispensing after discontinuation of e-prescriptions in the EHR. Design: Case series with interrupted time series analysis. Participants/Methods: Patients with at least 1 medication e-prescribed in ambulatory care and discontinued within 2-year study period from 1 year prior to 1 year after implementation of CancelRx were included.
