International FDG PET, CT Guidelines for Breast Cancer Patients

Background: Although many articles have been written about performing fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) PET/CT to evaluate patients with breast cancer, no consensus guidelines have been published that provide guidance for this imaging approach. Objective: To determine international guidelines to follow when using FDG PET/CT to evaluate patients with breast cancer. Design: Literature review and expert discussion. Methods: Members of both the EANM (European Association of Nuclear Medicine) and the SNMMI (Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging) formulated these guidelines for using FDG PET/CT to evaluate patients with breast cancer. Their guideline decisions were based on literature review and expert discussion. These guidelines were reviewed by other medical societies to allow additional input, such as the American College of Radiology.
