AI Can Diagnose Normal Chest X-Rays
Background: Since the radiologist workload continues to increase, methods to optimize this workload would be very beneficial. Various articles showing that artificial intelligence (AI) can detect chest x-ray abnormalities have been published; however, use of AI to detect normal chest x-rays, which might alleviate some of the radiologist burden, has not been well studied. Objective: To determine whether a commercially available AI product could accurately identify normal chest x-rays. Design: Retrospective analysis. Methods: Chest x-rays acquired between October 1, 2016, and October 14, 2016, from 2 hospitals were obtained. These examinations were performed on inpatients, outpatients, and emergency department patients, and only the first chest x-ray for each patient was reviewed. The commercially available AI program, Lunit INSIGHT, was used for the chest x-ray evaluation This program analyzed chest x-rays using the anterior-posterior and posterior-anterior projections. Since the prog
