Ultrasound-Guided Parathyroid Ablation Is Safe, Effective

Background: Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is common in patients with chronic kidney disease, affecting majority of patients on hemodialysis. Persistent elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) can result in skeletal and cardiovascular disease and increases all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in these patients. Microwave ablation (MWA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) are being increasingly used to treat SHPT, but outcomes in these patients are not well characterized. Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy (response of PTH, calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase [ALP] levels) of ultrasound-guided parathyroid MWA and RFA in patients with SHPT. Design: Prospective, multicenter cohort study conducted between September 2017 and March 2022. Participants/Methods: The primary end point was the proportion of participants achieving the target PTH level (≤585 pg/mL). Secondary end points included PTH, calcium, phosphorus, and ALP levels before ablation and time more...
