HIV PrEP, DoxyPrEP Feasible, May Be Effective for Reducing STIs
Background: Rates of bacterial sexually transmitted illnesses (STIs) remain high, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women. Doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxyPEP) – doxycycline 200 mg within 72 hours of sexual activity – has been shown to be effective in reducing STIs in MSM and transgender women. Although HIV (pre-exposure prophylaxis) PrEP is well established, doxycycline PrEP (doxyPrEP) is less well studied. Objective: To investigate the feasibility of doxyPrEP plus HIV PrEP among MSM and transgender women without HIV. Design: Pilot study, the Dual Daily HIV and STI (DuDHS) PrEP study. Participants/Methods: Participants were randomized 1:1 to either the immediate or deferred doxycycline groups. Both groups received daily tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine for 48 weeks. The immediate group started doxycycline (100 mg once daily) at study onset, and the deferred group started doxycycline at week 24. Study visits (at basel
