Increased Risk of MI, All-Cause Mortality in Hispanic/Latino Individuals With Elevated Lp(a)


Background: Lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) is associated with the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Lp(a) can vary by race and ethnicity; however, its implications for individuals of Hispanic/Latino descent are not well studied. Guidelines for using Lp(a) in clinical assessment are based on non-Hispanic/Latino populations. Objective: To provide a comprehensive evaluation of Lp(a) and its association with 10-year cardiovascular disease risk and mortality among Hispanic/Latino adults in the United States. Design: Prospective population-based study. Participants/Methods: The investigators leveraged data from the largest cohort of community dwelling U.S. Hispanic/Latino adults, the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, from 2008 to 2019.
