Emergency Radiologists' Overreads Frequently Identify Trauma Imaging Discrepancies
Background: Reevaluation of imaging studies from outside institutions is frequently and increasingly performed when patients are transferred to tertiary referral centers, particularly for trauma and other complex clinical conditions. Prior investigations have shown that interpretations by community radiologists may differ from those of subspecialty radiologists, with disagreement rates reported as high as 20%. Objective: To evaluate the discrepancy rate between emergency radiologists at an academic level 1 trauma center and outside community radiologists on trauma studies and to assess the impact of emergency radiologist overreads on patient management. Design: Retrospective study of the institutional radiology information system (RIS).
