Higher Failure Rate of Trabeculectomy With MCC in Hispanic Patients


Objective: To compare the success rate of trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (MMC) in patients of Hispanic and European descent. Design: Single-center, retrospective matched-cohort study. Methods: The investigators identified all patients who underwent initial trabeculectomy with MMC at an academic medical center during a 24-year period. Records were reviewed to identify demographic and clinical information, including self-identified ethnicity. All patients who were of Hispanic descent were included, and a control group of patients of European ethnicity was matched to each case based on age within 5 years, lens status, and date of surgery within 1 year. Follow-up records were reviewed to compare intraocular pressure (IOP) outcomes and the need for use of glaucoma medications after surgery. Results: 222 eyes of 204 patients were included.
