Modern Urethroplasty Provides Long-Term Patency, Patient-Reported Satisfaction


Background: Open urethroplasty is widely considered the gold standard for treatment of urethral stricture disease; however, the literature is very sparse on articles with follow-up of >5 years. Objective: To determine the long-term success of modern urethroplasty and identify factors associated with stricture recurrence. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Methods: The authors undertook an observational cohort study of men undergoing urethroplasty at 1 institution who had a minimum follow-up of 100 months. Cox regression was used to determine the significance of risk factors for failure, such as balanitis xerotica obliterans and radiation. Results: 733 cases were identified with a median follow-up of 12.3 years. Overall, 12% recurrences were noted, defined as Stricture recurrence increased with time of follow-up as expected, with 6% at 1 year, 10% at 5 years, and 12% after 10 years.
