MRI Can Find Hidden Facial Filler Complications


Background: The injection of fillers into facial areas is a procedure becoming commonly performed, such as for cosmetic purposes. Complications from such injections can occur and are becomingly increasingly reported. Determining the cause of the complications has typically been determined by ultrasound (US) examination, although this approach may not visualize all underlying causes. Objective: To describe the evaluation of a late complication of an injected facial filler and the value of MRI in determining the cause. Case Report: A 30-year-old patient with abnormal symptoms in the chin area presented for evaluation. This patient had undergone injection with a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler in the supraperiosteal plane 2 years prior. Her symptoms were tenderness and a pressure feeling in the chin area.
