CPN Schwannomas Can Be Safely Resected With Minimal Morbidity
Background: Common peroneal nerve (CPN) schwannomas are benign peripheral nerve tumors, which can occur either sporadically or as part of Neurofibromatosis I or II (NF I/II) syndromes. Objective: To study the results of surgical excision of CPN schwannomas. Methods: All patients were surgically treated and the sporadic cases were analyzed separately from NFII cases. NF I cases and tumors arising from the sciatic nerve proximal to the knee and distal to the fibular neck were excluded. Data collected included the usual patient demographics, clinical examination regarding details of the swelling, motor and sensory examination of the nerve involved, MRI details, surgical details, postoperative complications, and follow-up. A systematic review of the literature was also performed. Results: The total cohort comprised 36 cases, 22
