RSV Prefusion F Vaccine Effective in Preventing Hospitalization in Older Adults


Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes significant morbidity and mortality, especially in older adults and those with other health conditions. A recently developed vaccine containing prefusion F glycoproteins from the virus (RSVpreF) has been shown to decrease RSV-related lower respiratory tract disease, but studies have been insufficient to comment on the effect of hospitalizations. Design: Phase 4, investigator-initiated, pragmatic, open-label, parallel-group, individually randomized clinical trial. Participants: 131,276 adults aged ≥60 years in Denmark without contraindication to vaccine. Methods: Patients were randomized 1:1 to receive the RSVpreF vaccine (the RSVpreF group) or no vaccine (the control group).
