Laparoscopic TAP Blocks Are More Effective Than PSI
Background: Laparoscopic transversus abdominal plane (L-TAP) blocks have been shown to be as effective as ultrasound-guided TAP blocks, but they require fewer resources and training. The benefit of L-TAP blocks in post-appendectomy pain is unknown. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of LTAP block compared with port-site infiltration (PSI) of local anesthetic in patients undergoing laparoscopic appendicectomy. Design: Single-blinded, randomized controlled trial. Participants/Methods: Adult patients undergoing laparoscopic appendectomy for uncomplicated appendicitis at 1 of 3 Irish universities hospitals were randomized to L-TAP or PSI of local anesthetic for postoperative pain control. Exclusion criteria included conversion to open surgery, pregnancy or breastfeeding, suspected appendiceal tumor, right hemicolectomy or other additional surgical intervention, and use of other postoperative analgesic strategies such as epidural or patient-controlled analgesia. L-TAP patients were
