Background: Midazolam is commonly used in children prior to surgery. Clonidine is a centrally acting alpha-2 agonist and can provide preoperative sedation in children. Dexmedetomidine (dex) is a newer centrally acting alpha-2 agonist that is more selective and has a shorter half-life compared to clonidine.
