Hemorrhagic Cysts Have Marked Hyperintense Signal on T1-Weighted Images

Background: Renal cysts are common, and may contain hemorrhagic or proteinaceous contents, resulting in increased signal on T1-weighted images. Renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) that have hemorrhaged may also show this finding. Unenhanced CT of lesions with a markedly dense, homogeneous lesion is characteristic of hemorrhagic cysts, without requiring contrast.
